The History of the Cornish Pasty

The Cornish pasty is more than just a meal — it’s a proud symbol of Cornwall’s heritage. At Rowes Bakers, we keep this tradition alive by hand-crimping every pasty in the same way Cornish bakers have for generations. Our story and the history of the Cornish pasty are deeply connected, bringing authentic flavour from Cornwall to homes across the UK through our Cornish pasty delivery service.
A Taste of Cornish Heritage
The pasty’s story began over 300 years ago. Cornish tin miners needed a simple, hearty meal that was easy to carry underground. A mix of meat and vegetables wrapped in a pastry case made the perfect solution. Locals called it a ‘Crowst’ — a practical lunch kept clean from dust and soot.
Some mines even had large ovens on the surface to keep the pasties warm. Miners’ wives would mark their husbands’ initials on one end of the pastry so everyone knew whose was whose. The thick crust acted as a handle, thrown away after eating, to stop the miners’ hands — often covered in grime or even traces of arsenic — from touching their food.
Many miners also left a small corner of their pasty for the ‘little people’ who, according to legend, lived in the mines. These spirits were believed to bring bad luck if not offered a bite.
